Alcoholism and Depression

Alcoholism and Depression. Are You One Of Them?

Most doctors will tell you that alcoholism is a disease, but there is a huge segment of the population that says drinking is a choice that people make. Whatever you believe, alcoholism is a real problem that needs to be addressed if it is affecting your family. Drinking is something some people do for fun with friends once in a while in a social setting, but alcoholism is something that becomes entrenched in someone's life to the point where it can cost them everything they know and love. There is a strong connection between alcoholism and depression that has to be addressed before anyone can truly be free.

Alcoholism and Depression

Depression runs in families. This is yet another condition that some believe is something someone should just be able to get over. Anyone struggling with depression will tell you that all they want is to get over it and if it were that simple they would. Whatever the case, it is what it is. If someone has depression but refuses to believe they have it, they can turn to drinking to deal with the feelings that come with depression. This is just the first part of how alcoholism and depression are linked. The symptoms of depression can be temporarily treated with a drink but the key there is that it is temporary.

Someone drinking to rid themselves of dealing with their own life is going to start doing it more and more often. What they fail to realize is that they feel even worse the next morning. Drinking does not make problems go away. In fact, it can make those problems worse because they are being ignored along with the damage that comes with some behaviors people engage in while drinking. You may feel good for a few hours while drinking, but it all comes crashing back the next morning. The drinker than simply wants to drink more. Here the endless cycle of alcoholism and depression starts to become a habit.

In the end, alcoholism and depression become even more tied together because alcohol is actually a depressant. The last thing that people with depression need is something that makes them feel even more depressed. It just makes them drink more. This cycle can go on and on until someone is feeling so poorly that they can only feel semi-normal while drinking. They end up drinking all of the time. For some, they drink unless they are working. For others, they drink so much working is no longer possible and all of their healthy relationships die and they create ones with other drinkers exclusively.

Those that choose to stop drinking along with those that are forced to stop can make more headway if they understand that alcoholism and depression are ever connected. Those that try to stop drinking without dealing with the emotional part of drinking are likely to fail. That is why using a program like AA or going through inpatient rehab to stop drinking are more likely to succeed in moving on from using drinking as a crutch to get through life. Depression can be treated and managed but alcoholism is a disaster in the making.
